Microsoft is looking into VPN problems with the most recent Windows 11 release
Some Windows 11 users are experiencing issues with their VPN connections due to a monthly security patch.
The April 2024 Windows 11 update seems to have triggered connectivity issues with VPNs, as per Microsoft's acknowledgment of the situation. Released on April 9th, the security patch KB5036893 was intended for all active Windows 11 editions. However, following its installation, several users encountered challenges with their VPN connections, particularly those reliant on TPM-backed certificates.
One Reddit user, Flo-TPG, highlighted encountering a "certificate could not be found" error post the Windows 11 update, indicating a widespread issue. Microsoft has issued a cautionary note stating that VPN connections might experience disruptions after applying the April 2024 security update. The company has assured users that they are actively investigating these reports and promises to share further details soon.
Currently, the only solution is to uninstall the KB5036893 update. Nevertheless, Microsoft has assured users that they are diligently working on a fix, hinting at a forthcoming hotfix to address the problem.
These recent VPN challenges follow a pattern observed over a
year ago when a Windows 11 update caused significant speed issues, particularly
affecting L2TP/IPsec VPN connections. Despite Microsoft's Windows Insider
program, which aims to identify and address vulnerabilities in early stages of
updates, unforeseen complications, like those experienced with VPNs, continue
to emerge even after security fixes.
